Business association addresses onerous Philadelphia taxes

Midlantic Business Alliance responds head-on to its Philadelphia members’ tax woes

PHILADELPHIA – May 16, 2005 – Midlantic Business Alliance (MBA) today announced an initiative to assist its Philadelphia-based business members who are considering fleeing the area to a more business-friendly tax region.

Libby Beatty, chair of the MBA board appointed board member Stephen Markowitz to head the task force that will begin collecting information from economic development directors in Delaware, Bucks, Chester and Montgomery Counties in Pennsylvania; also Camden, Burlington and Gloucester Counties in New Jersey.

“We have been counting on Philadelphia City Council to make tax reform a priority, helping to ease this high and unfair handicap for small businesses, but it seems that moving out might be our members’ only answer,” stated Beatty. “As their business association, we must help them in any way we can, even if that means helping them relocate.”

“Of course, our initiative is planned in the event that Council decides not to take action to greatly reduce the tax burden,” Beatty added.

Midlantic Business Alliance, a Pennsylvania non-profit membership organization, provides group health insurance, networking opportunities, free business counseling, education and more to its small business members.
